The dinner performance “Telawif” deals with the role of food in shaping cultural and political identities under the circumstance of migration. The evening includes a four-course meal – appetizer, salad, main dish and dessert – based on recipes from Dr. Erna Meyer’s cookbook “How to cook in Palestine?” (1936). This was the first cookbook in Mandatory Palestine published in Hebrew, German and English. Ann-Kathrin Müller and Julia Schäfer, use archival materials and fresh ingredients as they guide the audience through the evening, ques- tioning how the medium of the cook- book was used to mobilize women for socio-political purposes. Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv, home to German immigrants, was built in 1936, the same year of the publi- cation of the book by Meyer, who was born in Berlin and immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1933. In this sense, the performance explores traces of German-Jewish immigrants in modern-day Israel. “Telawif” is part of the artist’s ongoing artistic research “What shall we eat this time?”
